The Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design is the only art school in Germany that offers courses in Architecture leading to a Bachelor (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) degree. The Architecture programme is embedded in a wide range of arts courses from the disciplines of art, design and science. This unique approach fosters the exchange of ideas with the fine and applied arts and gives the Architecture programme a profile that distinguishes it from other schools of Architecture.
Architecture is taught as an artistic discipline with the aim of imparting a wide range of design skills that enable students to cope with the varied and constantly changing requirements of the architect’s profession. The Architecture study programme at the Academy has also achieved a top position in Germany’s nationwide university ranking.
Students study in small classes under the intensive supervision of professors and their assistants, technical instructors and part-time staff. The classes in the BA and MA programmes focus on different topics ranging from furniture construction to urban planning, and from constructive to experimental and digital design. The introductory courses in the first year are interdisciplinary and students study together with students from the Industrial Design programme.
The Academy has a large number of excellently equipped workshops, from metalworking, woodworking and plastics workshops to computer pools with CNC milling machines and 3D plotters. Students have access to all artistic workshops such as printing, textiles, glass-making and bookbinding workshops and many more. Technical instructors are on hand to offer students support in putting their ideas into practice. From the very beginning of the programme students are given their own workshop place in brightly-lit shared workshops.
Studying Architecture at the Academy of Arts and Design offers students a broad variety of artistic, technical and scientific courses, as well as of interdisciplinary classes in the fields of design, art and science. A comprehensive range of theoretical courses allows students to conduct in-depth academic research and also offers the opportunity to complete a PhD qualification. The Weissenhof Institute offers an additional programme of courses. Exchange programmes with international universities throughout the world provide the opportunity to study abroad and to make contact with students in other countries.
The Academy has an excellent infrastructure: it has its own well-stocked and up-to-date library in the disciplines of art, stage design, architecture and design, a WLAN network on the campus, its own student refectory and a kindergarten.
The Academy is set in an excellent location on the Killesberg hill and can be reached from Stuttgart main station in six minutes by tram.
How long does the study programme last?
The international Bachelor and Master qualifications are recognised throughout the world. They divide the course of studies into two stages: the Bachelor course covers the first three years (6 semesters), while the Master course covers the fourth to fifth years (4 semesters). Students can thus finish their studies after three years with a BA or conduct a further two years of more in-depth study in a range of disciplines and graduate with a Master of Arts. At the Academy students also have the possibility to achieve a further qualification in the form of a PhD.
What are the entrance requirements?
New students are admitted in the winter semester only. For admission to the Bachelor course in Architecture, a university entrance qualification equivalent to the German Abitur and three months’ work experience are required. For the Master course it is necessary to have completed a university degree (BA, MA or diploma). The admissions procedure also involves the submission of a portfolio with samples of the student’s work, an entrance exam and an interview.
