Description of the MA study programme
The Master of Arts Architektur at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design offers students from both Germany and abroad with a Bachelor degree in Architecture the possibility to complete a further two-year high-quality university-level course in Architecture leading to a Master degree. The programme owes its unique character and special profile to the fact that it is embedded in an artistic and academic rather than a technical framework. Architecture and architectural training are thus primarily taught and studied from the viewpoint of cultural production.

The programme is based on a holistic concept: design is given a central role in the curriculum. The programme aims both to impart the skills required to create comprehensive, innovative and aesthetically appealing solutions to modern-day problems, as well as to allow students to foster an architectural intelligence that enables them to control and influence architectural and urban processes and developments. Parallel and in constant interaction with this, the programme also teaches and practices the systematic reflection on the cultural and social implications and perspectives of architectural decisions, as well as the thorough and precise assessment of the technical feasibility of projects on a solid methodological basis. Visual and verbal techniques for presenting architectural designs also play a major role in the overall spectrum of these objectives.

The classes participating in the Master of Arts Architektur study programme work in close cooperation with each other and form a unit. In addition, the programme is structured according to three different main topics: Design/Technology, Media/Theory, Cities/Structures. These are meant as different themes within the entire programme which aim to give students an additional opportunity to follow their own particular preferences and talents.

The Master of Arts Architektur at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design sees itself as a study and research centre for architectural excellence. This objective is fulfilled with the help of competent and highly skilled academic staff, the Academy’s superlative facilities and equipment and not least of all the Architecture School’s compact size, which allows for intensive and effective supervision of the students in small workgroups.

Information for applicants for the Master of Arts Architektur

Students can apply for admission twice a year.
